Hey Hip Chics!! Today’s post is a little different from what I normally bring you guys, but I thought it’d be helpful for those of you going through the same things I’m going through! What am I going through, you ask? MOVING! I’m moving!!! This is not a drill!!! I. AM. MOVING!!!! For those of you that don’t know, I’ve lived in Evansville, Indiana since November 2013. I’ve missed Indy and wanted to move back for quite some time, and IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING!!! As you can probably tell, I’m ecstatic about this move! Southern Indiana just isn’t the place for a Hip Chic like me, and coming back to Indy is a dream come true! While I’m thrilled, the idea and act of moving is sooo stressful and can be very overwhelming! This move kind of popped up out of nowhere and happened very quickly. Anxiety on 100! Lol Anywho, here are some packing/moving tips that helped me get everything ready for move day!!

Moving 101: Make It Make Sense

  1. Stay Ready (So You Don’t Have To Get Ready)
  2. Get The Help You Need!
  3. Dot Your i’s and Cross Your t’s
  4. It’s OK To Cry

Stay Ready (So You Don’t Have To Get Ready)

Like I said, I moved to Evansville almost 5 years ago. Evansville was never a “forever” location for me. I knew that. Because I was honest with myself about my future, I was able to make good choices to be prepared for the opportunity to leave when it arose!

1. First, I kept ALL of the boxes I used to move here. They were already labeled and ready to go when it was time to start packing! I also had the tape gun from my last move, so putting the boxes back together was a breeze! In addition to moving boxes, I kept boxes for all of my appliances (TVs, blender, toaster, etc). It’s typically safer to move things using the boxes and packing materials they came with!

2. I stuck my ground about NOT signing a new lease. I haven’t signed a lease since I moved here. Unfortunately, I had to have quite a few uncomfortable conversations with my leasing office about (not) signing a lease. It honestly got to the point where there was kind of a threatening tone from one employee in particular. Luckily for me, I pay rent on time every time and knew they wouldn’t want to lose a good tenant. The lease I signed was in my favor, and I just flat refused to sign a new one no matter how many times they asked. I feel trapped when I’m in a lease, and since I knew I was actively trying to leave this area, I didn’t want anythingggg holding me back when that time came!!

Get The Help You Need!!

  1. You can’t do everything. No matter how many times you tell yourself you can! I don’t always like asking for help, but I had some pretty heavy pieces that I couldn’t handle on my own when it came to taking apart furniture. You might be surprised how pleased people are to help you if you ask nicely! (And maybe offer food and drinks lol)
  2. Get movers (if you can afford it)! I HATE moving, but having movers makes the day SOOO much better in my opinion. You won’t have to lift heavy furniture or stress your family and friends out! If you don’t want to shell out $2000 for a moving company to load, drive and unload your truck, I’d recommend Uhaul and www.movinghelp.com! MovingHelp is an awesome site that partners with Uhaul to provide moving help at a very reasonable price. You have to have your own truck (or Uhaul) but the movers will come and load it for you. You drive the truck to the end location yourself and they come unload for you. They offer suggestions on how many movers/hours you’ll need based on your home size and you don’t release their pay until you’re 100% satisfied! You’ll probably spend less than half the price of what you’d spend on traditional movers! That’s including the truck rental. It’s a GREAT middle ground.

Dot Your i’s and Cross Your t’s

  1. Make a list of all utilities at the new and old locations. Call ahead and let them know that you’re moving and you’ll need to turn on or off utilities. The last thing you want is to get billed after you leave or not have power/water when you move into your new home!
  2. Clean!!! Please please please! CLEAN your home/apartment before you leave! I know moving is stressful and a lot of work, but take the extra time to leave on a good note! You never know when you’ll need a reference! Landlords really appreciate tenants that take care of their properties! And you want to start off right at your new place! Give it a good once over to start your new journey the right way!
  3. GET YOUR MONEY! Don’t forget to collect all owed deposit money!! Many times apartments and utility companies will have you pay a deposit when you move in. Check to make sure you’re not owed any money before you leave! If you are, make a plan to collect. Provide all parties with your forwarding address so you can avoid any funny business!

It’s OK To Cry

I don’t know about you, but I’m a highly emotional being lol … I’m always in a place of reflection when it’s time to move. I think about all the good and bad things that happened in this space that I’m leaving. Change is hard and leaving something familiar for something new can be taxing emotionally. Even if it’s a happy move, you don’t have to pretend like this wasn’t a major part of your life where memories were made! Remember the times, let yourself feel whatever you’re feeling, then get out of there!!! You’ve got a new life to live!! Live it boldly!

Ok guys that’s all for today’s moving tips and tricks!! I hope this helps someone else that’s about to embark on a new journey!! Comment below and let me know how you make your moves go smoothly!!

Also, comment below and let me know your favorite Indy summertime activities!! I was born and raised in Indy and visited often since I’ve been gone, but I haven’t lived in Indy full time for 10 years now! So much has changed since then, and I don’t really know what to do as an adult here LOL.. What are some cool active, social, professional and/or creative things to do around town? I’m excited to explore my hometown and take advantage of all it has to offer!! =D See you around town!!
