The Pursuit of Happyness
Your 20’s. The moment we’ve all been waiting for. College, partying, freedom. Graduation, degrees, careers. Finally legal and able to do all the cool things you’ve been waiting on. Time to get your own place (Pinterest worthy, of course), a brand new car, make at leasttt 6 figures and travel the globe like a boss! Then you’re ready for love, marriage and a baby carriage. Everything works out beautifully, every single detail you’ve been planning since you were a kid.
Just kidding. Your 20’s are amazing and fun but they can also be VERY scary and stressful. It’s an entire decade full of change, growth and uncertainty. Especially in this digital age, it’s way too easy to get on Pinterest or Instagram and see your peers living these seemingly perfect, stress free, fabulous lives. Next thing you know, you’re throwing the pity party of the year. No idea what you want to do with your life, haven’t found that special someone, student loans holding you back from the greatness you always imagined… Ugh what is lifeeeeee????
When you’re constantly comparing yourself to everyone around you, it’s easy to feel like your life isn’t moving along like it should. That’s when you hit that funk… You know, focusing on the all things you don’t have, convincing yourself you’ll be happy when you finally get that new job, buy that new car, lose that 10 lbs or whatever else you think happiness is.
Well I’ve got news for you! Happiness isn’t a material thing or a perfect living situation. There’s always more money, always a better job (unless you’re Beyoncé, that is). If you’re waiting on those things to make you happy, you’ll be waiting forever, always wanting more, never being satisfied. Happiness is a choice– one you have to make everyday.
Last winter, I hit one of those funks. The unbearable lack of color in the world (you know, dead grass, bare trees, sun setting before you even get home from work) mixed with the classic 20s pity party, had me totally down in the dumps. Then I saw a friend on Instagram posting new pictures everyday with the hashtag #100HappyDays. By day 5 or so, I got intrigued. Then about a month later, I started my own journey to happiness. The idea behind #100HappyDays is that happiness is a choice, one that we have to get in the habit of making each day if we want to appreciate where we are NOW. You can work towards your goals without downplaying the things you’ve already accomplished thus far. Every single day for 100 days, you pick one thing that makes you happy and share a post on social media. It can literally be ANYTHING. It’s actually muchhhh easier said than done in the beginning, but once you get into the habit of looking for the good in your life, you’ll be surprised by how much your attitude will change. Instead of focusing on the things you don’t have, you focus on your accomplishments, loved ones and passions!
So I’m challenging you all! Give it a shot! The official site is 100happydays.com. You can officially register for the challenge and read the creator’s backstory. Or you can just do your own, like I did. Turn “one day I’ll be happy” into #100HappyDays #Day1. What made you happy today?
Feel free to tag @IndyHipChic and add the hashtag #IndyHipChic so we can see what makes you happy! Also, be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram to get your daily dose of awesome!
