As we head into the colder months, seasons are changing, and I think it is a good time to reflect on how we grow and appreciate what life has given us so far.

I had a pretty transformative year with experiences I never knew that I’d accomplish. I was able to stick to a diet with substantial weight loss for a year. I traveled to the Caribbean with close friends. I earned a promotion. I’m living alone for the first time. I took the initiative to take care of myself and practice good health in both mind and body.

However, it is easy to slip into a pattern of negativity and that is not healthy. It creates a lot of stress and heightened anxiety for me. Once upon a time, I used to be the type of person who would make the effort every day to think of something positive. I wish that I never stopped that. I believe this practice can help create a lot of good in all aspects of anyone’s life. I believe it can make your relationships stronger, reduce stress, and ultimately make you happier.

Last night I made a list of ways to practice gratitude and I challenge you to attempt some of these for a few days or week. Pay attention to how much time and energy you usually spend on being negative and how it feels when you make efforts to brighten up your day.

  1.  Give at least one compliment a day
  2.  Try not to be critical of others, complain, or gossip
  3.  Keep a gratitude journal and write down your positive thoughts
  4.  Write a gratitude letter to someone whom you never gave a proper thanks
  5.  Appreciate the little things
  6.  Spend time with the people you love and care about
  7.  Volunteer or donate to an organization that helps others
  8.  Smile more
  9.  If someone does something nice for you, do something nice in return
  10.  Tell someone you love them
