If you’re a meat lover transitioning to a vegan diet it can be exceptionally difficult. Nothing tastes as good as it would without that final touch of chicken, turkey or beef. I struggled with this big time during our first week of Vegan for May. It wasn’t until I discovered Gardein meat alternatives that things got a lot easier.

Gardein is the perfect meat alternative offering a wide a products for all your protein needs. Currently, Gardein offers meat alternatives for fish, chicken, beef, and pork. They also carry gluten-free items, quick skillet meals and pocket meals, which are similar to hot pockets or pizza rolls. Currently, I’ve tried their meatless meatballs, chipotle black bean burgers, and their meatless chick’n strips.

The Meatless Meatballs were the first item I tried by Gardein and it’s probably my favorite. My mom, Vegan Tami, gave me a packet during our first week of Vegan for May to add to my taco bowl. Since then I have used the meatballs in my corn chowder, nachos, and spaghetti. I typically cook them in a little olive oil and water then season them with Weber Grilles kickin’ chicken and Lawrys seasoning salt. Forewarning, the meatballs do pack a bit of a punch so if you’re not a fan of spice I wouldn’t suggest adding any additional spicy seasonings. I also don’t use the meatballs in their meatball form. I allow them to soften, then chop them up like ground turkey or beef.

The Chipotle Black Bean Burgers by Gardein have become my go-to meal when I don’t feel like cooking. They are super easy to make, taking literally 5 minutes and taste DELICIOUS! Prior to Gardein, I had never tried a vegan/vegetarian style burger so I’m super excited to try the other burger options offered by Gardein. Like the meatballs, I prepare the burgers in water and a little olive oil and simply warm them up on both sides. The burgers are perfect on whole wheat or pretzel buns with lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, bbq sauce and a little vegan mayo.

So the Meatless Chick’n Strips by Gardein is where things slightly went downhill. I have always had an issue with texture so I was more concerned about how I would like the feeling of the meatless chick’n versus the taste. And like I suspected the texture was a little off-putting. I cooked the chicken alongside onion, bell peppers and corn with fajita seasoning in a skillet with vegan butter. The chick’n overall tasted great but I just can’t seem to get over it’s squishy texture. I think I would have liked the strips better if I had fried them or cooked them until they were a little more firm. I’ve had Gardein style chick’n at Yardhouse so I know if cooked properly the texture can be less of an issue.

Overall Gardein meatless alternatives have been a godsend during Vegan for May. The next items I want to try are their breakfast patties, beef tips, and crispy chick’n tenders. Have you tried any of Gardein’s meatless alternatives? If so which has been your favorite? Let us know down in the comment section below.
