We’ve officially been vegan for three weeks! Sheesh, time is flying! I don’t know about you, but I ALWAYS struggle with trying to decide what to eat (vegan or not lol). As a kid, I never really understood how much of a struggle it was for my mom to think of new things to make. Boy oh boy, do I feel that struggle now! I always feel like I’m eating the same things and get bored with the predictable menu. Every so often, I need some fresh new ideas that don’t require much thought on my part! I thought you guys might be in a similar boat, especially with this new vegan lifestyle. It’s still very new, so there are plenty of options that I wouldn’t even think of! That’s where a good cookbook comes into play!! I decided to bring you guys a few plant-based cookbooks by black authors to help you out of your food funk! Some even offer great spins on soul food classics that you may be missing since going vegan!

Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh Healthy and Creative African-American Cuisine by Bryant Terry

This cookbook has literally EVERYTHING!!! This is kinda one of those “one stop shop” types of cookbooks. Bryant Terry offers vegan versions of all kinds of down-home favorites; from collard greens, to soups and stocks, to bread, to drinks to desserts, he has it all! One thing I really like about this book is that he seems to understand that most people who buy this book aren’t five-star chefs. He even takes time at the beginning of the book to explain some kitchen equipment that he uses in the recipes and what it’s used for. He understands that everyone won’t be able to go buy everything he uses and encourages creativity and prioritizing whatever tools you really need! I also really like that he includes a “soundtrack” song with each recipe. I LOVE listening to music while I cook, so that was a cute little touch to put you in the mood he envisions for each recipe!

Sweet Potato Soul by Jenne Claiborne

Sweet Potato Soul is another full service type of cookbook! Jenne shares recipes for breakfast, sides, main dishes, desserts and more! This book also focuses on soul and many feel-good foods! Dishes that tastes and feel like home but are totally plant-based! Jenne also shares a list of tools that will be useful for users while preparing recipes from her book. She also included a list of pantry staples that are used regularly throughout this book and just in soul food in general. One thing I really enjoy about this book are the colorful images! I really enjoy how colorful vegan food can be. The photography is great and definitely will peak your interest! If you’d like to try out some recipes from Jenne before purchasing the book, check out her website www.sweetpotatosoul.com or her YouTube page!

28 Day Plant Powered Health Reboot: Reset Your Body, Lose Weight, Gain Energy & Feel Great by Jessica Jones and Wendy Lopez

Ok so this one isn’t totally vegan. This cookbook features many vegetarian recipes (plant based, but various dairy products and eggs do make an appearance). Although everything isn’t totally vegan, I decided to include this one because it’s written by two dieticians/nutritionists. I thought it was a good idea to have a book that focuses on food as it relates to health and how to make the best out of a plant based diet. It can be easy to get in a rut and eat foods that may be plant based but not necessarily giving you all of the nutrients and vitamins you need in a day. Jessica and Wendy offer some insight into the recommended amounts of various nutrients and what foods are good sources for each. They also offer a full grocery list and meal plan for week 1. When starting a new diet/lifestyle, it can be helpful to have someone take the guesswork out and just tell you what to do! Lol .. I also liked that they included a pre-week prep list– things to do before the start of the week to cut down on day to day cook time and just make your life a little easier!
